Previously known as the ‘KK Conrad’ and then the ‘KK Dressage’, the KK Balkenhol is a new variation of a very successful bit, now in a slimmer, 16mm diameter.
The Balkenhol is a single jointed snaffle with a unique mouthpiece that eliminates the nutcracker action of conventional single jointed bits. The bit lies perfectly on the tongue ensuring effective rein aids. The curved arms of the mouthpiece prevent uncomfortable pressure on the sensitive borders of the tongue.
More than 25 years of experience with this hugely successful bit has shown that it is really helpful for horses that are unsteady in the contact and are unresponsive in double-jointed (lozenge) bits. Often referred to as the ‘Balkenhol bit’ as Klaus Balkenhol uses this bit as much as he uses the perhaps more widely known KK Ultra range of bits.
The switch to 16mm is a huge improvement on an already very good design. 16mm is the single most useful diameter of snaffle to have as it suits the most horses. This model will be very useful for horses that tend to lean on the KK Ultra or Dynamic RS (in lozenge form). For horses with a dislike of double-jointed bits that are perhaps ‘fussy’ in the contact or back off from it, this one is a good choice. In other horses, that perhaps go adequately in a double-jointed bit but are slow to react to the rein aids, a switch to a single jointed bit such as this one can make a huge difference.
