This type of spur is a good choice for horses that need motivating, especially those who are non-responsive to a smooth rowelled spur. The rowel is completely blunt, with rounded edges, but gives a faint ‘bumping’ sensation that can elicit a quicker response to the aids. Also useful for horses that mark easily with blunt spurs – blunt spurs (without a rowel) tend to drag the skin and cause friction and rubbing, which is both painful and unsightly; a rowelled spur used correctly, can eliminate those concerns.
